The show notes are super important and helpful for you as a podcaster, because here you can provide your listeners with additional information about your episode. Since links are possible here, they are also an important marketing tool. The show notes are, so to speak, detailed notes about your podcast episode.

What the show notes should contain:

  • A summary of your episode. You can decide how elaborate you want to make it. It can be a detailed transcript or just key points on the most important core topics. But please note: A detailed text with keywords related to the content increases your visibility in Google.
  • Further links to addressed content or affiliate links. You can point out in the podcast that the links can be found in the show notes. If you have a sponsor, you can link your affiliate here.
  • Calls to action for your listeners: For example, you can ask for feedback, ask listeners to send in questions for next time, or recommend a product.

We have no character limit here, so go wild. You can also insert images and partially HTML.

Unfortunately, Julep Hosting has no influence on the display of the show notes on the various podcast platforms. They are not always displayed completely, sometimes not at all. It depends on the podcast directory, software, version, etc.

Difference Shownotes and description of the episode

Two things that are often confused and unfortunately not always displayed by all podcast directories. Apple Podcasts, for example, doesn't show the shownotes in addition to the description until your podcast has been subscribed to.

Important note for differentiation: The episode description is displayed BEFORE the episode is played, the Shownotes DURING and AFTER the episode is played. Other differences:

Episode Description:

  • Plain text, no HTML
  • Limited to 4000 characters
  • Content: Short summary of the episode, written concisely and excitingly, should convince your listeners that your new episode is the absolute hit.

Shownotes:

  • Formatted text, HTML is allowed
  • No length limit
  • Content: Further information about the episode and discussed topics, incl. links and pictures
